Oh, pics taken at Woodbury Common Outlet Mall, btw. Was day after marathon, hence the time to walk slowly and enjoy the scenery. Didn't get anything for myself, just baby stuff for my aunt Amelia!

Spent a day in Dubai enroute to NYC. Ben and I really liked the city. Went to Wild Wadi Water Park which was really fun. Of course, it was like a kid in a candy shop for him. Me...I had fun too, especially body boarding on the wave rider thingy. The super long slide was a bit scary to begin cuz it starts off 50m above ground, and aside from the drops which made my stomach jump I had a fear of falling off the sides. But then once I was on it it was all a blur and I reached the bottom in no time. And then there was the uphill water ride which was really interesting, not the least bit scary, just enjoyable.

Seeing the Burj and the tallest building in the world was really awesome!

AHM Post-Mortem

Last Sunday I completed the Army Half Marathon in 2hr15min. Not my best time, but decent, considering I felt strong at the end and felt no aches on my legs the next day. I need to learn how to pace myself properly - I blew up on my last 2 races (10km and 21km) because I ran too fast at the start, and this time around, I definitely had more energy left in the tank to go faster. Now to find some kind of middle ground.

Anyhow, that's a average 6.40min pace, and from how I felt at the end of it, I'm certain I could've held on for longer. Based on that, and allowing some fade, I think I shall target a 4hr45min marathon come November.

I have to say the AHM is the best local race I've taken part in to date. It was really well organized, there were drink stations located every 2km, and not just a small booth but long tables filled with water and isotonic drinks.

The parts that weren't lit along ECP were illuminated by light sticks. I imagine it looked a little trippy (imagine cuz I've never tripped) because all I could see were lightsticks and runners' heads bopping up and down, the sound of their shuffles audible despite my ipod.

And then there were the supporters, organized by different army units - Belly dancers! Transformer like robots! Drummers! Guys on stilts (a 50-something runner slapped the guys on stilts hands as like the pros do at the finish line and it made me laugh)! Men with tiger masks! (ok, this actually scared me a bit. Good thing the sun was out by then).

Speaking of sun - despite the unearthly wake up time of 3.30am, starting at 5.30am is great because you miss most of the sun's heat and enjoy running from dark to light.

It's definitely a race I think I'll do again next year. And my cousin Felix will have to too (cuz of NS)! He WALKED 10km this year - took him 1hr57min. My uncle (who is an avid runner) and I gave him a hard time about that while the rest of the family scolded us for not being supportive. It's not that we aren't. We are! But we knew 1hr57min meant a slowww 10km walk!

National Day Run

Started off today bright an early at 650am. Got out of bed, put on my running gear and started my 90min run (as stated in my program). 30min from Kembangan to Bedok Reservior, another 28min-ish around it. And then together with the Nike Run Club people - headed by the very enthusiastic and motivating Team Fatbird, I completed another loop around the reservior, which ended off with an uphill run. I love hills, they make you strong. But a hill at the end of 90 min was tiring!

This morning I ran a 10km run with Team Fatbird - a group of really enthusiastic runners, very nice bunch of people. They were fast and there was no way I could keep up with them unless I went moderately hard, but I'm on a program and I'm not allowed to have a heart rate higher than 150-160. And for me, that's nothing faster than 6.5min pace or 9km/hr. The guys I ran with today, they were all running at like 11-12km/hr or something. Yikes! 11km/hr is the fastest I've gone for a 10km so far :P. Far off from most of the runners today, who run 4hrs and under at marathons.

It does feel kinda sucky, you know, now being able to catch up and wondering when I'll get back to the fitness level I was at same time last year. The Nike Shape run happens in a month's time, and I'm not sure how well I'll fair. Not to mention my MAIN goal is the NY marathon and Army Half Marathon before that, so Ben keeps telling me not to get too bothered by the other races along the way. He keeps saying, "Build your base, no speedwork for now or it'll ruin your marathon training."

And I'm listening....although at times like today I really wish I could go faster and not end up last! But I know the method works and it has proven time and time again - not just with beginners but with some faster runners too - I'm talking sub 3hr guys. It's just hard to be the tortoise (it just occurred to me that the 2nd o in tortoise is silent). I wanna be a hare - I saw Vivian Tang and Sumiko Tan running again today, they run so purttily.

Oh well, someday!
